The “I Hate to Cook Book” is 50 years old!

I know, I’m behind the eight ball on this one… but I just discovered that one of my mom’s favorite cook books has hit a major milestone!

Peg Bracken’s “I Hate to Cook Book” is now 50 years old…

…and to celebrate, the publishers have issued a 50th anniversary edition!

Steak and potatoes

And that’s not a euphemism — I actually made steak and potatoes for dinner last night!

London Broil to be exact, which is cut that can either be flank steak or (more commonly in my area) a round steak. While I love flank steak, it can be pricey here, and the London Broils are often on a “Buy One/Get One Free” deal — which is what happened last week, and explains why my stand-up freezer is packed with juicy Lancaster Brand London Broils.

This is what I used to make the marinade we all like.

Candied walnut and goat cheese salad

I first ate this salad at a local eatery near us, and nearly died from happiness. I simply HAD to figure out how to make it for myself, so — thanks to the power of the internet — I’ve come up with a recipe that makes my toes curl with joy.

The only “special” ingredient that I don’t normally keep in my pantry is the goat cheese — but, after having this salad the other night, I can promise you that goat cheese will be on my shopping list all summer long. Yum!
