A happy gluten-free find
Today has been busy so far: I got lost in Philadelphia, called The Hubster in a panic so he could help me get to where I was going, got the thumbs up from my neurologist, called The Hubster and apologized for the earlier panic, found my way to the Italian Market (where Rocky used to jog), drove right past the restaurant supply store I was interested in and then couldn’t find a place to park, gave up and drove back to the suburbs, and then decided to go to the fancy schmancy grocery store to pick up some gluten-free items.
And all of this on an empty stomach and a full bladder.
But I digress.
This post was not supposed to be about my bladder, but about a gluten free product I stumbled across that made my skirt fly up.

I’ve recently begun being active on the Celiac forum at Children with Diabetes (the folks are lovely there and I’ve gotten lots of good info.) One of the parents was lamenting that, while they’d been able to find GF options for making Chinese food for their Celiac child, they hadn’t been able to find fortune cookies.
Well… TA DAAAAA! I saw these from A Taste of Thai — a good company for GF items — and grabbed the box to read the ingredient list. Ooooh! Nothing set off warning bells. So, I turned the box over and what did I spy?

I love when they make it easy!
I also love when grocery stores have public rest rooms. I really needed that!
I wandered and wandered and wandered around Wegman’s and loved all the high-quality produce, cheeses, juices, and boxed goods, but was surprised that — on some items — Whole Paycheck was actually lower in price. But, in terms of selection, Wegman’s definitely wins, hands-down.
They carry a lot of the Schär products, and I’ve grown rather found of their wafer cookies. (So fond, in fact, that I waited just long enough to take this picture before consuming that whole package in one go.)

*burp*
Hopefully, that will be enough food to keep me satisfied through the high school orientation I have to go to tonight.
I’m trying very hard NOT to feel like a woman who is old enough to have a child about to enter high school.
It’s not working.

Wegman’s has by far the lowest prices on cereal – which we go through about two tons of every year.
We buy organic, dye-free cereals for Spawn (many of them are gluten-free, too) and we spend about half as much at Wegman’s as we would at Mr. Z’s or Giant. But cereal isn’t the only thing we go there for specifically because of the price. You REALLY have to learn your way around to find out what’s a good deal at each of the grocery stores, though.
Because we have no snow here in North NJ, I ended up going to our local FoodTown for some items that were on sale. While there I “discovered” a new brand, which you probably already know about, but I thought I’d share any way. Cherrybrook Kitchen. I was thrilled because their products were egg free, nut free and dairy free (even though I only care about egg). They also have a variety of gluten free. They have a nice looking web site and I thought of you and wanted to share.
I haven’t tried many of the GF mixes out there, but these appeal to me. Let me know if you like it!
Ok, I made the chocolate cake mix (actually ended up making them as cupcakes/muffins). They are quite good — although they did “sink” a little after coming out of the oven (I’m used to this…seems like everything eggless tends to sink a bit). They are very tasty (too tasty — my waistline will pay heavily). I have ordered their 6 pack (pancake mix, brownie mix, cake mix, etc).
I can’t speak for their gluten free mixes, but their egg free/dairy free/peanut free get a thumbs up from me.
Excellent – thanks for letting me know, Beth! It’s definitely worth checking out.
